Strengthening Voices: Our Dialogue with Radio Canada International
On November 30th, 2025, our association had the privilege of engaging in a meaningful conversation with Radio Canada International’s Arabic Service, hosted by journalist Samir Bendjafer. This event was more than an interview, it was a powerful opportunity to amplify our community’s voice, share our vision, and advocate for issues that matter deeply to Sudanese and South Sudanese people living in Canada.
Why Media Engagement Matters
Media platforms like Radio Canada International play a critical role in shaping public understanding and influencing policy conversations. By stepping into this space, we ensure that the stories, struggles, and aspirations of our community are heard on a national and international level. This dialogue allowed us to highlight not only our programs but also the challenges and opportunities that define our journey as a united community.
Key Topics Discussed
During the conversation, our executive board members, MLA Lina Hamid, and community delegates highlighted several key topics that define who we are and what we stand for:
- Our Origins and Unity: We explored the history behind our association’s formation and why, despite the political separation of Sudan and South Sudan in 2011, we continue to work together as one community. This unity reflects our shared heritage, cultural roots, and a commitment to supporting each other beyond borders.
- Advocacy for Peace and Justice: We reaffirmed our role in speaking out and standing up for individuals and families affected by the ongoing conflicts in both countries, standing as a voice for peace and human rights.
- Programs That Empower: From cultural engagement to youth development, we discussed the programs we offer and their vital role in helping newcomers and community members thrive in the Maritimes.
- Immigration Challenges: We raised concerns about Canadian immigration policies that often disadvantage migrants from Sudan and South Sudan, calling for fairer and more inclusive systems.
- Youth Affairs and the Future: Finally, we shared our plans to pave the way for young people to succeed in an ever-changing world through education, mentorship, and opportunities that nurture leadership and resilience.
Looking Ahead
This conversation was a milestone in our ongoing efforts to build bridges between our community and the broader Canadian society. It reaffirmed our commitment to advocacy, cultural preservation, and empowerment for all.
